The significance of the Big Banana is that the Coffs Coast region is heavily reliant on banana production.  There are a number of these ‘big things’ located around Australia in tourist areas and many of them are built to signify the region where they are found.

The origins of the structure come from the 1960s.  A man named John Landy wanted something that would attract people to his roadside stalls that sold bananas.  Over the years, additional attractions were added and it came to have a life of its own.

It is difficult to appreciate the size of the Banana until you are standing beside it.  It is truly huge, and it weighs in at 1500 pounds.  It is actually styled from a real banana which was cut into small pieces and then recreated in its giant size.

There have been many things added to the Big Banana attraction over the years and it now boasts everything from rides and shows to products that are related to bananas.  There is a gift shop that sells a number of products that are made from bananas and a cafe that not surprisingly serves many items that contain the featured fruit.

Shows are available daily that depict the history of banana production in the area and also talk about the importance and the benefits of this food staple of the region.  It is entertaining and it will be very educational, especially for the children.

The children will not get bored here, as there are also a number rides available.  There is a toboggan ride available that allows you to control the speed of the toboggan as you race down a concrete half tube.  The kids will probably want to go on this one many times.  Another one that will be fun for the whole family is a trike ride around the area.  These are vehicles that are driven by experienced drivers and will carry three people at a time.  They are three-wheeled Harley Davidson machines and they will definitely provide some good photo opportunities.

There is even an ice rink located there and you can rent skates.  Instruction is available for people who are beginners.  There's something located at the Big Banana for everybody in the family, and they also specialize in larger groups, functions and even conferences.
